The American Academy of Ophthalmology accepts advertising on GetEyeSmart.org. The Academy has the right to refuse any advertisement that is or potentially is inappropriate or incompatible with our mission. The presence of an ad on GetEyeSmart.org does not imply endorsement of the advertised company or product. Advertisers must not make unsubstantiated health claims or suggest that the Academy has endorsed a product. Advertising may be placed on the site adjacent to content related to advertiser interest. All advertising on GetEyeSmart.org is clearly labeled as an advertisement. The Academy may change this policy at its discretion at any time without notice.

Advertising that may be allowed on GetEyeSmart.org, provided certain criteria are met:

  • Corporate image advertising or corporate sponsorship
  • Over-the-counter medications
  • Prescription drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for approved indications consistent with product labeling
  • Medical products or devices as approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration [including eye glass and contact lens, and IOL ads]
  • Consumer products with a potential health connection
  • Pharmacies (retail and online — VIPPS program compliant only for online)
  • Fitness products or services
  • Nonmedical or non-health-related consumer products and services

The following advertisements are prohibited on GetEyeSmart.org and EyeWiki.org:

  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Weapons, firearms, ammunition, or fireworks
  • Gambling and lottery
  • Pornography or related themes
  • Political advertisements
  • Religious advertisements
  • Social cause advertisements
  • Advertisements that claim to have a "miracle" cure or method
  • Advertisements for off-label use of drugs or devices
  • Advertisements directed at children
  • Legal, including malpractice
  • Competing websites or organizations
  • Comparative advertising (no mention of competitive brand names within an ad)
  • Individual Eye MD ads or ASC ads  (i.e., LASIK centers)

The following advertisement types are prohibited:

  • Pop-ups and floating ads or surveys
  • Ads that have forms within them to collect personally identifiable information while a visitor is on geteyesmart.org
  • Sweepstakes

The following criteria must be met to allow a company to advertise:

  • Must not make a health claim for a product that is not clearly substantiated. Advertisers may be required to submit supporting documentation to substantiate claims.
  • No implication of endorsement by the Academy or geteyesmart.org may be made.
  • The advertisement, advertising icons and company logos must be displayed in such a way that they clearly are not part of the geteyesmart.org website content.
  • Advertisers and agencies cannot collect email addresses without the users' expressed permission.  
  • Collecting and selling of mailing lists without the users' expressed permission is not allowed.
  • Advertisers and agencies cannot collect any personally identifiable information from geteyesmart.org visitors or place any cookies, applets or other such files — if those files transmit any personally identifiable information to the advertisers or agencies — on computers of geteyesmart.org visitors who do not visit advertisers' sites by clicking on their ad banners.
  • The full rules for any market research or promotion must be displayed or be available by a displayed link.
  • No unsolicited commercial messages are allowed.

The Academy has final approval and reserves the right to reject, cancel or remove at any time any advertisement, sponsor/product messages, and banners from geteyesmart.org for any reason. In such a case, the Academy will provide prompt notice to the advertiser, together with an explanation. This includes verification of advertisement content and placement before it is produced on the site.

These guidelines are intended to provide general guidance. They are not inclusive or exhaustive and are subject to change at the discretion of the Academy at any time.
